Choline has long been an underestimated (vitamin B-like) nutrient. But that is changing. In 2012, the European Commission decided that three health claims for choline could be considered scientifically proven. It was found to be important for normal lipid metabolism, normal homocysteine metabolism and a well-functioning liver. And in 2016, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) decided that choline is an essential nutrient that the body cannot produce in sufficient quantities and that must be obtained mostly from food. The appropriate intake in Europe has been set at 400 mg/day for adults, based on the average intake in European countries. 480 mg/day is recommended for pregnant women, and even 520 mg per day for breastfeeding women. In 2016, an adequate intake was also established for the first time in America. However, this is based on clinical studies specifically conducted to determine the daily requirement (sufficient for a healthy liver) and which found a value of 550 mg/day. The average intake of adults in Europe varies between 291 and 468 mg/day.
