The evening primrose (Oenothera) belongs to the evening primrose family (Onagraceae). The evening primrose grows mainly on the North and South American continents. The evening primrose owes its name to its bright yellow flowers, which only open completely at dusk. The valuable oil of the evening primrose is extracted from its seeds and consists of the polyunsaturated omega-6 fatty acids linoleic acid (between 70 and 80 percent), gamma-linolenic acid and other unsaturated fatty acids. The evening primrose oil also contains various amino acids, minerals and vitamin E. The polyunsaturated omega-6 fatty acid linoleic acid cannot be produced by the body itself and must therefore be taken in through food. Linolenic acids are an important component of the skin and can help to strengthen the barrier function or reduce moisture loss. |
