Description

Vitamin D is actually a hormone. It enables the absorption of calcium and phosphorus from the intestine and regulates gene expression in over 2000 of our 30,000 genes.
Vitamin D3 is produced naturally in the skin in humans when UVB light hits the skin and converts cholesterol into previtamin D, which is then converted into D3 (cholecalciferol) in the liver.
It is estimated that 20 minutes of sun exposure produces 20,000 IU of vitamin D3 and we know that there are vitamin D3 receptors in most cells of the body.

Vitamin D is important for:

  • Maintain healthy bones and teeth.
  • Absorption of calcium and phosphorus, all important for bone health.
  • Support normal cell division.
  • Helps keep the immune system normal, including the inflammatory response to wounds and infections
  • Normal muscle activity. There are a number of important factors that affect our body's production of vitamin D. These include:
  • Latitude - The further north you live, the less intense your UV exposure will be because the sun's rays have to travel farther when the sun is lower. If you live above 35 degrees, you won't be able to make vitamin D from the sun from November to March.
  • Time of year - The time of year affects the angle at which the sun's rays hit the earth, and that angle affects how much UVB reaches the skin. This depends on where you live in the world. Generally, vitamin D levels are higher at the end of summer than at the end of winter. The days of vitamin D production are fewer the further north you go.
  • Altitude - The higher the altitude, the more vitamin D you can get from exposure to UVB rays. At lower altitudes, the atmosphere absorbs the sun's rays.
  • Time of day - When the sun is directly overhead, UVB exposure is greater.
  • Air pollution - Pollution can block UVB rays.
  • Cloud cover - UVB light is 50% less under cloud cover.
  • Sunscreen - The higher the SPF, the less UVB exposure. An SPF of 8 prevents 92% of the skin's production of vitamin D and an SPF of 15 reduces it by 99%.
  • Melanin content of the skin. Skin types are classified from 1-6. Type 1 is fair-skinned and always burns, while type 6 is dark-skinned and never burns. However, dark-skinned people need up to 10 times as much sun as fair-skinned people. It is harder for the sun to penetrate the skin and make vitamin D.
  • Age - Older people require more sun exposure to make vitamin D. As we age, we produce fewer vitamin D precursors and therefore less vitamin D. An older person produces 75% less than a young person when exposed for the same amount of time, and older people spend less time in the sun.
  • Weight - The fatter you are, the less vitamin D is available to you because fat cells store it and it is less available for tissues and organs
  • Clothing cover - The more clothing you cover your skin, the less UVB you are exposed to.

A statement from the Ministry of Health explicitly states:

“We are aware that a proportion of the UK population may be at risk of vitamin D deficiency. This is a concern, particularly for at-risk groups such as pregnant women, infants and young children.”
Last year, the Chief Medical Officers in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland wrote to healthcare professionals to raise awareness of this important issue and recommended the use of vitamin D supplements for at-risk groups.

To support these recommendations, the Ministry of Health has issued new guidelines for vitamin D supplements, which are listed below:

    Children 6 months-5 years: 7-8.5 mcg
    Pregnant and breastfeeding: 10 mcg
    65 years +: 10 mcg
People who are not exposed to too much sun: 10 mcg
