High bioavailability, with vitamin C.

Why Choose Iron Bisglycinate?

This product contains iron in the form of  iron bisglycinate . Each iron particle is strongly bound (chelated) to two (bis) molecules of the amino acid glycine. The general term for such a compound is amino acid chelate or amino acid chelated mineral. The word “chelate” comes from the Greek and means “claw”.

This form of the compound was chosen because it is gentle on the stomach (which is not the case with most iron compounds) and because its bioavailability is particularly good. In addition, the formula is enriched with vitamin C in the form of ascorbic acid to increase iron absorption even more. The iron bisglycinate in this product bears the brand name Ferrochel® and comes from Albion Minerals, the specialist in amino acid-bound minerals.

World leader & innovator in the field of amino acid chelated minerals

Greenleaves Vitamins only uses real amino acid chelates from Albion Minerals, recognizable by the TRAACS® brand, which stands for “The Real Amino Acid Chelate System”. This brand was created to differentiate it from other, potentially inferior, unstable amino acid chelates. Albion has registered more than 100 patents worldwide guaranteeing the process, science and structure of its amino acid chelated minerals. In addition, Albions minerals are researched and every batch produced is subjected to a quality check. Indeed, it is important to check that the chelation has actually occurred and that the bonds (holding the molecules together) are strong enough.

Mineral salts versus amino acid chelated minerals

What normally happens with mineral salts: When minerals get into the acidic environment of the stomach, the digestive process begins with the separation of the mineral part from the chemical structure. However, this does not happen with the amino acid chelate form, as described below.

As the mineral element goes through the digestive process, it is naturally electrically charged. This charge attracts the element to other charged particles (ions), such as B. occur in vegetables, fibers and fats. These substances from food isolate the mineral ions so that they can no longer be absorbed and used so well by the body (see Figure 2).

The limited amount of free mineral ions that are now available continue to pass through the gastrointestinal tract and compete with other minerals for absorption through the intestinal wall and into the cells (such as calcium).

"M" stands for mineral and "R" stands for residual group, ie the coupled molecule (s) ".

Benefits of amino acid chelated minerals

In the case of iron in the form of iron bisglycinate, each iron particle is strongly bound (chelated) to two (bis) molecules of the amino acid glycine. This creates a kind of ring structure with the mineral in the core (see Figure 3).

How iron bisglycinate is absorbed

The chelate structure in an amino acid chelate is strong enough not to break down under the influence of gastric juice or digestive enzymes (as is usually the case with other mineral compounds), but also weak enough that the mineral element can be released once it is released from the cells was absorbed in the intestine. The amino acids fold around the mineral element and protect it during the digestive process and do not let go of it. In addition, the electrical charge on the chelate is neutral, so it doesn't get stuck on food residues in the stomach and intestines.

The amino acid chelate thus reaches the small intestine as a whole, where it is absorbed as a compound with two amino acids (dipeptide), which is very advantageous because the body can absorb amino acids (and especially dipeptides) very easily. In the epithelial tissue of the middle part of the small intestine, the amino acid-chelated mineral is then actively transported into the mucosal cells without competing with other minerals. It is only in the mucous membrane cells that metabolic processes ensure that the glycine and mineral are broken down and made available to the various organs and systems in the body.

It is then available to the various organs and systems in the body.

The role of iron in the body

Iron is an essential trace element which, among other things, contributes to the formation of hemoglobin in red blood cells. So it plays a role in the transport of oxygen in the body. And through this participation in the transport of oxygen, it contributes to normal cognitive functions. Iron is also found in so-called cytochromes. These are certain enzymes with iron as a cofactor that are involved in the transport of electrons in the mitochondria and are essential for the production of cell energy in the form of ATP. Iron is therefore important for the energy metabolism and to support the energy level. It can therefore help reduce fatigue. In addition, iron's role in transporting oxygen and energy metabolism also means that it is necessary for the formation of new cells and tissues. It also has a positive influence on the immune system; possibly by being involved in the production and regulation of certain immune cells and substances.
